Week Twenty One: Panties

I dedicate this painting to my good friend who mistakenly thought I said I was posting two panties on my blog today. If you are reading this, my friend, it was so cute I had to make it come true!! I hope you enjoy!

Week Six “Betty WOWW” (painting)

This week I embraced a few things in this painting: feet, typography and roses. I figure I need to start practicing these three if I do plan on purchasing a tattoo gun. I can not draw hands and feet to save my life - somedays I get lucky and some days I fall short, so in general, I tend to steer clear if I can. (I have been told that the hands I draw look more like claws - haha!) And this week I quickly learned that I am out of touch with typography and roses! Once I completed this week’s painting, I took a step back and was extremely disappointed and contemplated NOT posting this painting. But the more I looked at it the more I realized that (1.) the painting resembled someone and (2.) then, thinking of the artist, I was inspired to do something a little different this week. Now, it has grown on me! (See the post above for the Betty WOWW (vector).)
Muses: The Jersey Shore/JWOWW and Tyson McAdoo
Muse #1: I have been catching up on so many shows since starting this blog! Seems I am inspired by another each week. One guilty pleasure has been the Jersey Shore. JWOWW has been my favorite since the beginning! So, I guess it would only make sense for it to come out in my work! I think the “Betty WOWW” painting resembles JWOWW, hence the name.
Muse #2: I discovered Tyson McAdoo at the 2011 Dragon*Con. His table was the table with the biggest crowd around it and, after pusing my way through, I knew immediately why (check out his works of art here http://www.tysonmcadoo.com). His digital images are so stylistic and realistic; you assume in his world that this is how women look. Upon closer investigation, you notice his beautiful women have small distorted feet. This made me giggle as I, too, have trouble drawing hands and feet.
When I was done painting, and contemplating tossing this out, I remembered that Tyson McAdoo was a digital media artist. I was saved! Yesterday afternoon, I decided to scan in the painting and turn it into a digital peice. Less than 24 hours later…

I hope you enjoy!

Week Five: “Oysters Are Waiting”

Muses: “The Ballad of Mushroom Down” by Emilie Autumn and Mushrooms
Muse #1: Emilie Autumn (EA): an artist, a musician, a performer, a legend. She can’t be categorized, although some have tried labeling her goth, emo, and even steam punk… She has created her own label or genre of music called Vionlindustrial and has toured the world numerous times with her album “Opheliac”. She composes all of her music and has a very interesting story to tell that expands beyond her lyrics and into poems and novels. I have a total girl crush on EA (can ya tell?) and I am in love with all of her music, poems, art, and anything else she produces. One particular poem of hers, “The Ballad of Mushroom Down” (listen here » http://bit.ly/yfMWUi), really inspired me to create the series “Fungi Pride”.
Muse #2: After listening to “The Ballad of Mushroom Down” I decided to research mushrooms and create my own little world, as EA has done. This project was stopped short when I realized I was creating the reverse Smurfs! I continued with the art, dropped the story (summary below), but kept the name: Fungi Pride.
As I was listening to the poem, I envisioned a patch of mushrooms (born from the feces of some wild animal) planted right next to a tall oak tree, hundreds of years old. Within this patch of mushrooms lived a village of little green women with one “wise-man” leader or healer. As you travel up the tree you find more “tree mushrooms” and more villages. Each inhabitant of these villages had blotchy skin with of all kinds of greens and yellows and boils polka-dotting the skin which, in some cases (and places), is peeling away! Here in this town, the “uglier” would be considered the “most beautiful”, a reverse of our society’s idea of beauty.

^Fungi Pride 2010 ^Psychedelic Pride 2010

^”Wise-Man/Healer” unfinished
I now have three complete pieces in the “Fungi Pride” series (“Fungi Pride”, “Psychedelic Pride” and “Oysters Are Waiting”) and one in the making (untitled). Who knows? I may continue this until I get 12 solid pieces so that I can make something of this…
I hope you enjoy!

Week Four: “A Splash Of Something Different”

Muse #1: My inspiration this week was the ever-elusive octopus and its hypnotic movement. Have you ever seen one crawl or jet-off? It’s beautifully creepy! Everything about these creatures is weird and saggy (random fact: this sea creature has no skeleton but has three hearts) and I would never want to get too close to one without the glass or the heavy duty acrylic plastic (or whatever the aquarium “glass” is made of) separating us! But you have to agree.. They are mesmerizing! In this week’s work of art, I wanted to do someting a little different and play with movement of octopuses.
..And let’s talk about this. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “the world’s most comprehensive single-language print dictionary”, the plural form of octopus is not octopi but octopuses. When I read this, I had a mini triumph inside and danced to the beat of all the cynics’ drums who have warned me of sounding uneducated when calling the creatures by the wrong plural form. (Oh, if I could only go back and show them this now!) A little smile formed when I read what another source had to say on the topic “Folwer’s Modern English Usage states that ‘the only acceptable plural in English is “octopuses”’, that “octopi” is ‘misconceived’, and “octopodes” ‘pedantic’.” But, c’est la vie… I will take my mini-triumph and keep-on keeping-on! To read more, Wikipedia has an entire Etymology and Pluralization section dedicated to this argument. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus…
I tried to search Netflix for a documentary on the creatures to get inspiration and to learn more about the creatures, but was sadly disappointed when I only found Octopus 1 & 2 (horror movies?) and Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, starring Debbie, now Deborah, Gibson (I tried watching this SyFy original movie and only made it through the first five minutes). Instead, I settled for Google images and Wikipedia.
The title and material go hand-in-hand this week: I used ink to outline the octopus and the blue watercolor in the painting represents the ink octpuses use as a defense mechanism. I enjoyed making this piece because the subject matter is of something that I don’t normally study but I am glad that it is now complete. I will leave you all now as I need to go put my wrist on ice (outlining the octopus really worked my hand and wrist).
I hope you enjoy!
